Why Can’t You Lose Weight?!
You’re eating right…exercising and that scale just doesn’t budge 🙁
Healthy weight loss isn’t just about calories in and calories out…it also has a lot to do with any health issues you may have….medications you take…age…genetics…stress…and oh yes…self sabotage aka mindless eating.
Let’s look at some of the reasons your scale is stuck…
Hydration – Water…Water…Water. You hear it over and over again..you have to drink water!!! If you are dehydrated your kidneys don’t function properly. Your body looks to your Liver for support which causes fat to be stored rather than burned.
Cortisol – Chronic stress and lack of sleep triggers an increase in cortisol production. Too much Cortisol slows down your metabolism. “Stress” fat is stored in your mid section or abdomen…the last place you want it to be. Exercise reduces stress…reducing cortisol. You don’t have to go to the gym….go for a brisk walk or bike ride 🙂
Protein – Are you eating enough Protein? Protein burns fat…it also makes you feel fuller for longer 🙂 When people hear protein they think dairy & meat…not the case….you can get protein from many other sources. Beans, Lentils, Edamame, Almonds to name just a few.
Food Labels – So you’re buying up everything insight that says..low fat…low carb..sugar free….etc. Bad Idea!!! Labels give you a fall sense of healthy eating and portion size along with nutritional value is often thrown to the wind.
Genetics – Chances are if your parents are overweight…you will be too. There seems to be a genetic disposition that can cause you to store body fat.
Age – As we get..gulp…older….our metabolism begins to slow down. Those 5 pounds don’t come off as easily as they did 10 years ago.
Medication – There are many medications…especially high blood pressure medication…that causes your metabolism to slow down.
Alcohol – Drinking alcohol falls under self sabotage…. Alcohol contains large amounts of sugar and unwanted calories.
Mindless Eating – We’ve all done this….talking on the phone…watching TV…instead of a portion we take the bag thinking we’ll only eat a few…fat chance. Before you know it half the bag is gone…oops 🙁
Scale Stress – Getting on that scale everyday and not seeing it move can be very depressing and frustrating. Try weighing yourself once a week instead 😉
There are other ways to determine if you are losing weight than getting on the scale…
- How do your clothes fit? Are your pants a little loose? Some people lose inches before they show weight loss on the scale.
- How do you feel? Do you have more energy? As your body becomes healthier…you’ll begin to feel better.
A “diet” can become a psychological issue….you feel like you’re punishing or depriving yourself of the foods you love….but the foods you love have gotten you to this unhealthy place!! So rather than “diet” why not begin the process of making small changes that you can live with and watch how easy it will become part of your day to day life.
