Risks of Summer
Whoohoo Summer is finally here!! 🙂
Every season has it’s own down side and Summer is no exception. We are outside as much as we possibly can so accidents happen and health issues arise from the extreme heat. If you’re like me..my shoes are off as much as possible…being barefoot has it’s own peril. 🙁
Here’s a look at things to be aware of so you can have a safe and enjoyable Summer 😉
Sunburn – Prolonged unprotected exposure to the sun can cause you to have a horrible case of sunburn which can lead to various forms of skin cancer. Be sure to where sunscreen!! Reapply often and try to enjoy a little shade during the course of the day.
Heat Stroke – Watch that “Heat Index” we hear on the news! The heat index is a combination of the air temperature and the humidity. When the heat index reaches 95 or above the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke or respiratory issues increases considerably. Your body temperature rises rapidly and can cause serious health issues. Stay hydrated, stay in air conditioning, take a cool dip in the water…whatever you have to do to stay cool and keep your body temperature down. Signs of heat stroke are rapid breathing, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, headache and dizziness. If you have any of these symptoms…don’t delay…seek medical attention!!
Food Poisoning – Has the potato salad been in the sun for hours? What about the burgers…..have they been sitting in the heat before they were grilled? Summer is all about BBQs… picnics and having a good time with family and friends. Unfortunately sometimes good sense goes to the wayside when it comes to food storage. You can get a nasty case of food poisoning if food has not been stored properly 🙁 Signs of food poisoning are cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, weakness and fatigue. Symptoms can start quickly or 2 to 6 hours later. Most of the time you don’t need medical attention…just have to let it run it’s course. If you feel symptoms are severe or you are becoming extremely dehydrated..seek medical attention.
Bike Riding – Most bike accidents result in head injuries. Be sure to wear a helmet!!
Drowning – Swim with a buddy….supervise children at ALL times…it only takes a minute for drowning to happen.
Dehydration – Becoming dehydrated can happen quickly in the summer heat. Keep water handy and drink…drink…drink 🙂
Fireworks – Every year severe…sometimes critical injuries occur from Fireworks. Supervision and common sense can help prevent injury.
Lightning – You’re probably thinking…oh please..but Lightning can be deadly. The odds of being struck by lightning are close to 1 in a million…do you want to be that one?! The heat of summer can bring on a thunderstorm with little forewarning. Usually with thunder…comes lightning. If you see lightning…take cover until the storm passes. I love dancing in a sun shower…not a thunder storm 😉
Bare Feet – I’ve learned this the hard way…Bare feet get splinters, cuts, bug bites and burns from hot surfaces you don’t think are hot 🙁
That being said..a little common sense and prevention can help you have WONDERFUL summer!!! 🙂
