Polyphenols in tea are what provide its anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic benefits. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most studied polyphenol in tea and has been shown to be the most effective at eliminating free radicals. Catechins are antioxidants that fight and may even prevent cell damage. Green tea is not processed much before it is poured in your cup so it is rich in catechins. Catechins are strong antibacterial and antiviral agents which make them effective for treating everything from flu to cancer.
